Overview
In 2006 MSN asked Hallmark if they could create a viral game to help generate interest around the World Cup. The deadline was tight. It was the middle of May and the world cup finals were due to start in June, but I knew I could probably build on an experimental 'kick up' style game engine I had already built.
The theory of the game is that the first person to play sets up a tournament, gains a high score and then challenges their friends.
Their freinds receive an email and by clicking a link are automatically introduced into the tournament.
The challenge I set myself was to create a game so simple, that the players only ever had to click one link and the game would automatically understand who they were, which tournament they belonged to etc.
After playing the game, players could leave messages and be informed of high score updates via email.
The game ran for around a month during the World Cup and over 10,000 tournaments were set up.
